The two Dutch UNESCO Chairs focusing on education for sustainable development (ESD), the Netherlands Commission for UNESCO, and the Dutch Interdepartmental Program Learning for Sustainable Development are organizing this seminar. The latter is the Dutch focal point for the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2015.

The UNESCO Chair ‘Social Learning and Sustainable Development’ advances the theory and practice of social learning in the context of sustainable development by developing and executing a carefully co-designed research agenda and by linking key thinkers and key institutions in a world-wide network focusing on this emerging field. The Chair is held by Professor Arjen Wals of Wageningen University.

The UNESCO Chair ‘Knowledge Transfer for Sustainable Development supported by ICTs’ studies and supports transboundary configurations of groups, organizations, businesses and educational institutions that seek to co-create solutions to local and regional sustainability issues. Particular emphasis is placed on the way in which ICT supports the learning taking place within these configurations. The Chair is held by Professor Rietje van Dam-Mieras of the Open University of the Netherlands and Leiden University.
